Coming Out to Close Minded Parents - A video by 4 straight people
Words cannot even explain how offended my girlfriend and I are after watching this video so I decided to rip it apart.
I will be giving an approximate time for each rude thing said just cause Im doing it in order or if you want to hear the offense yourself
So!
.24 (not even a minute) “So none of us has gone through this” THEY SHOULD HAVE GONE TO NEXT QUESTION. ENDED THE VIDEO. DONE. How can you say that, knowing you have No experience in the subject and then continue to talk about it?
1:10 “It depends to me how close you are to your parents” As a matter of fact not really. I’m really close with my mom, as in she’s like my mom, sister, and best friend all wrapped into one, Coming out to her was one of the Most Difficult things I’ve ever done in my life. So it really comes down to knowing what it's like to come out.... which none of them have ever had to do.
1:25 “If you feel more comfortable coming out to a friend rather than your parents maybe you should be focusing on something else.” As in if you feel more comfortable with your friend than your parents with coming out you should reevaluate your relationship with your parents? No. Coming out to a friend who share your same views is A LOT easier than coming out to a parent, regardless how accepting they SEEM to be.
2:07. “I understand the weight of feeling like you can’t say this.” IM SORRY YOU DO NOT ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND. You have NO IDEA the weight of being a part of the LGBT+ community so people don’t act like you know on a person level.
2:25 “I just think rip the band-aid” lmao what? Don’t do that?
2:45 “If you’re female maybe start requesting more taco nights... if you’re male start asking for more bratwurst” The amount of UTTERLY INSULTING that is makes my blood boil. How rude of you to make such a crude joke like that? And I’m sorry, when did TASTE BUDS equal LGBT+? I honestly had to pause the video because I was so offended. A person asked a very serious question and you’re going to joke about it?
3:55 “I feel like myself....” Please don’t go there. Like ever. You can’t put yourself in my gay ass shoes and comment on it like you know what that feels like
4:03 “ONLY if they’re close minded, coming out to an open minded parent is no big deal.” Yes thank you for demeaning my emotions of fear when I came out to my open minded mother. Because coming out in general is just a walk in the park right? Right.
5:25 “If they don’t handle it well they wont’t tell you ‘ no you can’t be gay’” IM SORRY YES THEY CAN. I’ve seen it happen plenty of times! Hell, there are YouTube videos where parents say that exact phrase.
6:50 “Just do it in college” Yes thank you for making it seem like when girls go to college and kiss a girl, its just a phase and isn’t actual legit.
7:17 “Allow them <the parents> to draw their own conclusions, make your parents think you’re gay”
7:52 “Don’t act the opposite <of gay> cause then when you come out it’ll be a shock.” I literally don’t even know how to go about making people realize that being gay... is NOT A LIFESTYLE, it is not a way of dressing, it is not a way of speaking, Being gay is BEING SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO THE SAME SEX. So to sit there and say don’t act straight, is ridiculous because they have apparently yet to realize there is no definition of ACTING straight. You’re straight if you like people of the opposite sex, not by not requesting tacos for dinner.
8:24 “If you’re being you’re authentic self then you don’t have to say ‘I’m Gay’” and “I don’t have to go around saying I’m straight.” You don’t have to go around saying that you’re straight because society automatically labels you as straight until otherwise stated, hence the need for people to come out and say they’re gay regardless of their ‘authentic’ way of living. People won’t ever ask you if you’re sure you like woman even though you’ve never had sex. But the second I said I was bi, my mom asked how did I know if I’ve never has sex with a girl. So you’ll never know what it’s like to have to validate yourself by coming out.
9:04 “Call the fricking cops” lol, yes call the cops when your parents tell you that you can’t be gay, Solid advice.
9:30 “In my opinion this question is subjective” Yes, and a question that should have been answered by an actual person in the LGBT community.
10:10 “Keeping your head down isn’t terrible” Yes because you know what it’s like to have to keep your head down about being who you are as an individual. Because no matter what, what have you had to hide? These people are all straight and will never be pushed down because of it, so stop talking like you know.
Now, know that I’m not saying they’re all wrong, There were some good bits in there, like waiting if you’re in danger, And I thank them for being allies, truly, but there are better ways of going about it. I know in the video he talked about him having gay friends which confused me because you would think that he would have his gay friends come talk instead of 3 other straight people. He could have asked a gay youtuber to guest star and bring good awareness and talk about things straight people may not realize.
This video is kind of like a person preaching about the horrors of racism when they’ve never experienced it themselves. Is it helpful to bring attention to it? Certainly but make sure when you do it that you;re not being offensive or making light of a serious situation and this video did both of those things.
If you’re going to make a video about coming out, have someone who’s actually had to do it.
